The satirical tale "The Princess and the Pea" was an old Swedish tale, rewritten and published by Hans Christian Andersen in 1835. This popular tale is written in a light, colloquial style, reminiscent of oral storytelling techniques. It tells the story of a princess who prooves her royalty status by being overly dramatical and sensitive. The hand-drawn ink illustrations show this whimsical world where princesses can act like princesses and get rewarded for it by marrying the handsome prince.
The illustrations are by the Macedonian-born artist Biljana Kroll and the story is narrated/translated in both English and Macedonian. The beautiful piano music was played by the Bulgarian-born master pianist Lilia Stoytcheva.
